The annual observance of the disability day was seeked to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

It is marked on every 3rd of December but because it was crushed with this year farmer’s day celebration, authorities made the whole December as the month of celebration.

The theme for this year program was dubbed: Leadership and Participation of PWDs Towards an Inclusive, Accessible & Sustainable of Post Covid-19 World.

Addressing the participants at Tafo community and social center in the Old Tafo-Pankrono municipality of the Ashanti region on wednesday, the municipal director of social welfare and community development, Mad. Diana Yeboah charged the government of Ghana to consider persons with disability anytime they are appointing people to take charge of government offices and institutions.

According to Mad. Diana, many are the PWDs who are endowed with unique qualities and innovative skills which when given them the nod could help bring development and improvement to the country.

She told the gathering that, about 422 are people who have registered as members under her department and solicited for an increment of their 3 per cent share of the assembly common fund following numerous request made by them ( PWDs).

The annual International Day of Disabled Persons were proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3, which as well to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti regional secretary for the Ghana Federation of Disabilities GFD, Mr. Baah Appiadu Daniel disclosing their challenges saids apart from the lack of accessibility to public and private places thus physical structure and support services for their members in wheelchair and cloches and those with hearing impaired, the time to release their share of the assembly common fund and amount associated are also worrying them.

With the issue of government appointment, the GFD Secretary complained that they are neglected when it comes to appointment as officials make whole process partisan politics being the central and local governance.

He also empowered the members to take active participation in every public election in the country especially when it comes to the local assembly elections and any institution or association they belong themselves into so as to get a representative.
