The legislative instrument titled “Ghana Standard Authority Pricing of Cement Regulation 2024” was presented on July 2 by Mr. Kobina T. Hammond, the Minister of Trade and Industry.
In his remarks on the legislative instrument, Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minority Chief Whip and National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Adaklu, stated: “Mr. Speaker, I have no objections to this. The last time the Minister was present, colleagues on both sides of the House raised significant concerns, and those concerns have been referred back to the Committee and addressed.
This has sparked considerable apprehension among stakeholders in the industry, including Dr. Nana K. Gyasi, a prominent dealer in the field. According to him, there can be a harmonious understanding among all parties involved, highlighting the issue of the dollar as a primary concern, among others.
Furthermore, the renowned expert in the cement sector emphasized that certain imported materials are essential in producing the product. Therefore, in order for the bill to benefit all parties, including customers, considerations must be made regarding the trucks used for transportation, maintenance, and the loading personnel.
The government must take all these factors into account before passing the cement bill, or else they will encounter significant challenges once the bill is enacted.
Despite the factual nature of this situation, customers, who are primarily in need of the product, are deeply concerned about the escalating prices, which have become increasingly burdensome as landlords raise rents.
