All eyes were on Parliament today, Tuesday, December 21, 2021 after what happened in the chamber yesterday. What started as a normal day yesterday ended with scenes of trade of blows as the Majority and Minority sides of Parliament disagreed over the e-levy. With Alban Bagbin not in his usual chair, the seat was left in the hands of Joe Osei Owusu and his assistant Francis Asiamah, the Second Deputy.
Today, Parliament resumed with Joseph Osei Wusu still as Speaker with no signs of Alban Bagbin. As proceedings started the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah raised a motion. According to him discussions have been ongoing and nothing credible has been arrived it. He noted that strong heads were still working and things needed to cool down.
Osei Owusu called for the adjournment of the house. He tabled the Speaker to adjourn the house till January 18, 2022. This was seconded by Haruna Iddrisu who explained that since the Appropriation Bill had been passed some things can run even next year and so they are ready for an adjournment of the house. the motion was carried out and adjourned till next year 2022.
This declaration by the Speaker erupted in songs of celebration by the Minority side while the Majority were left frustrated in their efforts to get the e-levy passed. Consultations are expected to go on during this recess to bring a conclusion to the issue.
