Drug and substance abuse prime causes of Dementia and mental illness – Psychiatrist
The Nurse in charge of Mental Health Services in the Jaman North District health Directorate, Mr. Menson Kwabena Peter has said that Dementia cases in the district and Ghana at large are on the rise as a result of substance and drug abuse among most people in the country.
He stressed that most mental health illness cases being reported to the district mental unit are a result of drug abuse and alcohol abuse which mostly leads to dementia on the part of the aged.
Speaking on A program dubbed “You and Your Health on Gye Nyame Fm chaired by Kwaku Mensah Abrampa, Mr. Menson expressed that most people consider the intake of hard drugs and alcohol as their sources of happiness to overcome their worries but he described it as a wrong perception stating that hard drugs and alcohol abuse can only lessen the worries temporally but poses an endless danger in the lives of people.
He has therefore advised the general public to desist from substance abuse and rather seek psychological advice to overcome worries and anxieties in life.
