15pws reduction on fuel price does transport faresn’t mean will be slashed

Government has directed the Ghana Oil Company – Goil to reduce fuel prices by 15 pesewas effective December 7, 2021. This follows a meeting between the Coalition of Commercial Transport Operators and government at the Jubilee House on December 6, 2021, chaired by the Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Opare.

Although the 15 pesewas reduction falls short of demands made by the Commercial Transport Operators, the group has accepted it in good faith with an agreement that proposals it made for the scrapping or reduction of some levies on petroleum products will be factored into the Mid-Year Budget Review.

Head of Communications at GPRTU, Abass Imoro told Nathaniel Nartey that the 15 pesewas reduction by Goil alone does not mean transport fares will be reduced.

”We met with the Chief of Staff who Chaired the meeting. She told us that Goil has promised to reduce their products effective from today (December 7, 2021) from 6.850 to 6.700 per liter.

We concluded that Goil will reduce today and subsequently continue reducing….our clients are aware that we are in a good position to come up with an upward adjustment of transport fares of which we have decided that due to the economic hardship we will not do that so I don’t think it will be fair for our clients”.

Mr. Imoro accused the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council, GRTCC of siding with the government during the negotiations which according to him is not surprising.

He made reference to a statement signed by General Secretary of the GRTCC Emmanuel Ohene-Yaboah, saying it will not allow some misguided elements within the sector to use the Council to pursue.

“It is unfortunate he wrote that”, he noted.
