Increments in electricity and water bills: PURC okays

There couldn’t have been any other better time to increase electricity and water bills than now – PURC justifies latest utility tariff hikes

Mr. Patrick Antwi, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Manager of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has justified that irrespective of the current economic hardships Ghanaians are going through, there wouldn’t have been any other better time to increase utility tariffs than at this time.

The PURC has announced a 27.15% and 21.55% increments in tariffs for electricity and water respectively effective September 1, 2022; a development which majority of Ghanaians have not taken lightly because they are of the view that this will worsen the plight of the already suffering Citizenry.

But explaining the rationale behind the Commission’s decision in an interview with Peace News correspondent Nana Kwadwo Adu of Asta Fm in Techiman, Mr. Patrick Antwi the Bono/Ahafo Regional PURC Manager justified that the tariffs increment was to cushion the operational costs of VRA/NEDCo, ECG and Ghana Water Company in other not for them to collapse and be able to continue serving Ghanaians better.

For his part, Mr. Isaac Osei Agyemang the Regional Complaints Officer of PURC urged People who are in need of meters to be extra patient as that problem will soon be resolved.

Finally, Madam Julia Antwi the Regional PRO of PURC cautioned against illegal connections and encouraged the People to always report their challenges to their office for solutions.
