Election 2024: Mahama to Insure All Frontline Health Workers

Insuring frontline health workers is crucial for several reasons:

Protection: Health workers face numerous risks and hazards in their line of work, especially during public health emergencies like pandemics. Insurance coverage can provide them with financial protection in case of illness, injury, or death while on duty.

Motivation: Knowing that they are covered by insurance can boost the morale and motivation of frontline health workers. It can give them peace of mind and confidence to perform their duties effectively without worrying about the financial consequences of potential risks.

Retention and recruitment: Offering insurance as part of the benefits package can help attract and retain skilled health workers. It demonstrates that their well-being is valued and can contribute to a more stable and dedicated workforce in the healthcare sector.

Support for families: In the unfortunate event of a health worker falling ill or passing away, insurance can provide financial support to their families. This can help alleviate the financial burden and ensure that their loved ones are taken care of during difficult times.

Public health impact: Insuring frontline health workers can have a positive impact on public health outcomes. When health workers feel supported and protected, they are more likely to deliver high-quality care and services, ultimately benefiting the health and well-being of the population they serve.

And it is for these reasons that former President John Mahama has promised to pay insurance for all frontline health workers if he is elected as the next president of Ghana. He made this commitment during a campaign event, stating that he recognises the sacrifices and risks that health workers have been facing, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mahama emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of health workers, who are at the forefront of the fight against various diseases and pledged to prioritise their insurance coverage and provide them with the necessary support and resources to carry out their duties effectively.

The former president and the 2024 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress also highlighted the need to invest in the healthcare system and improve working conditions for health workers. He promised to address the challenges facing the sector and ensure that frontline workers are adequately compensated and protected.
