Confusion at Parliarment, Speaker Alban Kingsford Bagbin Receives public Backlashes.
On Monday December 20th 2021, parliament was thrown into a state of confusion with members engaging in free for all fight over the attempts by the majority to push through the controversial e-levy bill which seeks to impose an additional 1.75 tax on electronic transactions in the country.
Whiles the bill has received mixed reactions from some members of the public, a section of civil society, agents of the mobile money business and opposition political parties, for its implementation to be withdrawn, government believes otherwise especially when the idea behind the new electronic tax meant to drive governments developmental agenda.
Following the chaos, the Ghana Legislators have come under hot public attack as the citizenry thought the honourable Members of Parliarment were role models and mentors to many people especially the teeming youth of Ghana.
Whilst section of Ghanaians are lambasting the MPs others are also apportioning blames as to who caused the disturbances.
However, commenting on the riots with the media in Kumasi on Wednesday, the Founder of Health Caucus of the New Patriotic Party NPP, Dr. Kwaku Duah blamed the Speaker of Parliarment, Rt. Right Hon. Alban Kingsford Bagbin for portraying the majority side as intolerant and not ready to build consensus on the controversial e-levy bill and must be held responsible for the scuffle that ensued in parliament.
The old Tafo-Pankrono NPP constituency chairman hopeful said much were expected from the Speaker with his 28 years experience in Parliarment as former MP, who has climbed to all levels of positions in the Parliarment including, minority and majority Leader, first speaker and now speaker of Parliarment which according to him could not sit aloof to allow blows to happen and to bring such dishonor to Ghana.
The Ashanti regional NPP identifiable group PRO confessed that, right Hon Alban Bagbin was the best leader for the NDC when he contested John Mahama during NDC flag bearership race in somewhere 2016, adding that the speaker must be up and doing, refrain from partisanship and restore the honor of the legislative house that has lost in his era as speaker of the Parliarment.

Speaking a day after the fight on the floor of parliament, majority leader sort to push the blame on the speaker of parliament for showing leadership in the business of the house.
According to the him, leadership including the speaker have all times met with the president to deliberate on the best ways to build consensus on the e-levy and therefore it came as a surprise when the speaker did not preside over the presentation of the e-levy bill.
But, in a quick rebuttal the deputy minority leader, James Klutse Avedzi dispelled claims by Affenyo- Markin on the poor leadership skills shown by the speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon S. K Bagdin.
In his estimation the absence of the speaker was not deliberate explaining that, the speaker just returned from a medical checkup and he’s been responding to medical advice. He must obey and follow the instructions and directives of his doctors. Because his life is important.
Parliament has meanwhile adjourned sitting until January 2022 where the house is expected to resume the work of the house.
