A/R; Akrofuom District Assembly: Persons with Disabilities PWDs, receive support, business start-up kits

The Akrofuom District Assembly in the Ashanti Region has distributed items worth Thirty Two Thousand Six Hundred and Sixty Ghana cedis (GH₵32,660.00) to persons with disabilities in the district.

The distribution is the sixth to be done by the Assembly since its creation through the Social Welfare and Community Development outfit of the Assembly.

At a short ceremony to hand over the items to the beneficiaries, the District Chief Executive for Akrofuom, Hon. Maurice Jonas Woode reiterated the Assembly’s aspiration to ensure that people living with disabilities in the district also receive their share of the national cake.

He added that over two hundred people living with disabilities in the district have received various forms of support from the Assembly.

Some of these are in the form of business start up supports, apprenticeship support, clutches, educational and medical assistance.

Others have also been supported with wheel chairs, farming inputs like mist blowers, cutlasses, wellington boots, fertilizers and cocoa spraying machines.

The rest have also been supported with industrial sewing machines, hairdresser dryers, electric ovens, chest freezers and many items.

Hon. Woode said he was optimistic that the items received by the beneficiaries have improved their living conditions.

He however, added that those who have still not received theirs should be patient as they will all be considered.

For his part, the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Ebenezer Douglas Ntiamoah also said the Assembly will always ensure that People with disabilities in the district always get their portion whenever the District Assembly Common Fund is released.

He again warned the beneficiaries not to sell the items but rather make good use of them since occasionally, a team will go round to ensure that the items they received are being used judiciously.

He warned that anyone who will sell his or her item will have to face the full rigours of the law.

The District Social Welfare and Community Development Officer, Mr Gideon Osei-Poku also reiterated that the processes in selecting the beneficiaries are always on fair grounds.

He said firstly the Department received request from the applicants and then a team of officials conducted a needs assessment to ensure that the applicants really deserve the items being requested for them to improve their living conditions.

Mr Gideon Osei-Poku again revealed that there is a backlog of request that are yet to be attended to but as to when the funds are released, his outfit will ensure that all requests are supplied.

Ms. Sarah Tieku the Secretary of the PWDs in the Akrofuom District was full of praise for the Assembly for consistently supporting them.

She disclosed that the support they keep getting from the Assembly is enormous adding that for the many years that they were part of the Adansi South District they never received such assistance.

Also present at the event was the Assembly member for Sikaman electoral area, Hon. Matthew Baah and other key stakeholders in the district.
