E-Levy Finally Dropped??

There are speculations that the government may have dropped the electronic transaction tax popularly known as the E-Levy. This is because the chairman of finance committee of parliament Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng has failed to lay the E-Levy bill to parliament on the final day of parliametary business.

Parliament is going on recession after today and will resume next year. All bills that need implementation in 2022 are supposed to be passed by close of parliametary business today. However, the MP for Kushegu Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor has told journalists that the bills currently before the house do not include the Electronic Transaction Tax Bill. The member of the finance committee said his Chairman had refused to table the obnoxious bill because he knows it will be rejected.

Speaking to Joynews parlimentary correspondent Kwesi Parker Wilson today, Hon. Jinapor said his information had it that Government was considering backing down on the new tax regime. He maintained that everything about the E Levy was bad and the minority will reject it anytime it is presented.

Parker Wilson Ayisha Ibrahim on the Pulse that the minority MPs were in parliament in their numbers waiting to reject the E Levy bill if it is presented. He said most of the NPP MPs were also present but not up to the number of the minority MPs. He added that all NPP MPs present were in white but only a handful of NDC MPs were wearing white.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin directed the Chairman of finance committee to present the E Levy bill today. He made this ruling yesterday after making his first appearance to the house this month.

Parliament is expected to work throughout the night to ensure all bills currently before the house are voted on before it goes on recession. We shall be following proceedings in parliament and will update followers as and when needed.
