Tema Police Foils A Robbery Attack At Afienya

The Tema Regional Police Command encountered four (4) members of a robbery gang who had embarked on a robbery expedition in the Afienya-Mataheko area, leading to a violent exchange of gunfire that resulted in the death of three (3) of the robbers and arrest one.

Briefing a section of the press, ASP Dede Dzakpasu the head of public affairs for the Tema Police said, Intelligence Directorate (PID) of the Tema Region received credible intelligence that a group of ex-convicts was planning to carry out a robbery attacks within the Tema Metropolis and its environs.

Acting on this information, police officers were deployed to the area and placed on surveillance.

In the early hours of yesterday, Monday, 29 December 2025, at about 1 am, the suspects were sighted attempting to gain entry into a residential premises at Afienya-Mataheko. Police moved in and were met with open gunfire from the gang members, resulting in an exchange of gunfire with the Police.

During the encounter, four (4) of the armed robbery suspects were shot, of which three (3), who were identified as Kwabena Azuwebi alias Lastman, Yaro Bawku, and Faisal, were quickly rushed to the Police Hospital for medical care but were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Suspect Kassim Hussein, who sustained a gunshot wound escaped but was recaptured after he was lured into disclosing his hideout. During interrogation, he disclosed the gang’s modus operandi and the identities of the other members of the gang. He was also taken to the Hospital for medical treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment.

Police recovered one (1) AK-47 rifle, one (1) Taurus pistol loaded with six (6) rounds of ammunition, two (2) cutlasses, and two (2) Royal motorbikes, one unregistered, and the other with registration number M-25-GT-4243, which were used by the robbers. All exhibits have been retained pending further investigations.

The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary pending autopsy.

ASP Dede Dzakpasu said Investigations are ongoing to identify possible accomplices and establish links to other criminal activities and gangs.

The police also said, the deceased robbers, Kwabena Azuwebi alias Lastman, Yaro Bawku, Faisal, and Kassim Hussein, according to their records shows their involvement in a series of robberies within the Region and have all been on the Police wanted list for their involvement in several robberies.
