The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Security Secretariat has initiated a stringent operation to combat commercial transport operators charging unauthorized fares in Greater Kumasi.
Led by Capt. (Rtd.) Kwame Jabari, Ashanti Regional Security Liaison Officer, the exercise mobilizes over 20 personnel from the regional office, bolstered by district security units.
This strategic move targets unscrupulous commercial drivers, conductors, and loading boys inflating transport costs, with arrestees facing prosecution via the Ghana Police Service. The primary aim is to alleviate traffic congestion and mitigate commuter hardship.
Capt. Jabari emphasized collaboration with Metro Mass Transit to ferry passengers from select communities to Kejetia and beyond.
“We are going to partner with the KMA, we are going to partner with the police, arrest those who are charging illegal prices and ensure there’s sanctity within the bus terminals,” he declared. Operations are underway, with teams stationed at bus terminals during peak hours.
“We are starting it today, so we are going to do evenings and early mornings now. Early in the morning, there will be a team at the various bus terminals,” Capt. Jabari affirmed.
