Bibiani Anhwianso-Bekwai Municipality: National Land Reclamation Project Launched ~ NAELP

As part of efforts to mitigate the effects of Operation Halt(2) on illegal mining activities, the government through the establishment of the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP) under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, in December, 2021 began implementing the national land reclamation. The programme aims to reclaim and restore mined out lands and return them to sustainable use. Such giant strides made in land reclamation will help protect the environment and the terrestrial ecosystem for future generations.

NAELP and the team of consultants and contractors in charge of the programme came together to meet the chiefs, assembly members, leaders and people of Asawinso, Mpesiem, Nambro, Nketieso and Sorano in the Bibiani Anhwianso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region, to dialogue on the activities of the reclamation programme.

In an interview with Kwame Kontor Boateng Lord fm,Mr. Benedict Addae, the Deputy National Coordinator for National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP) traced the history of illegal mining activities in Ghana. He also outlined the atrocities posed by this menace and the need to adopt safety measures to address them. Government has made several efforts through Operation Halt(2) and one such was the national reclamation and to restore afforestation and to get back the land to fertile.

Nana Akosua Gyasiwa III, Adontenhemaa of Sefwi Asawinso ‘A’ expressed her outfit to government for the good initiative taken to reclaimed land with oil palm plantation, coconut, teak etc and also to employ the teeming youth in her area to reduce unemployment.

Hon. Frank Ackah, the Assemblyman for Sefwi Asawinso ‘A’ Electoral Area stated that the communities like Mpesiem, Manse, Nambro, Sorano and Nkatieso are fully in support of the National Alternative Employment And Livelihood Programme(NAELP) since it will save his people from falling victims by way of felling into lose pits and stressed that he will make sure that the officials employ the locals from the area to improve their standing of living.
