CAF assigns referee who handled Bafana’s controversia defeat to Ghana, to AFCON finals

To oversee the Afcon finals, the CAF has assigned the referee who oversaw Bafana’s contentious defeat to Ghana…

The controversial Senegal referee is back in action.

The man at the center of the turmoil that resulted in Bafana Bafana’s failure to qualify for the Qatar FIFA World Cup Play-Offs in 2022 will finally return to international duty today, more than two months after his last international assignment with the national team.

Maguette Ndiaye, a Senegalese referee, last officiated in Bafana Bafana’s contentious defeat to Ghana on November 14, which resulted in the South African Football Association (SAFA) filing an appeal with FIFA over the manner in which the match was handled.

The appeal was then rejected by the world’s governing organization.

Ndiaye has not been assigned to any CAF tasks since then, despite the fact that he was appointed as one of the referees for the upcoming AFCON finals and is still considered one of the six candidates for the World Cup whistle position later this year.

He will make his international comeback as a fourth official in the Group D match between Sudan and Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday night in New York.

Sudan and Guinea-Bissau are both listed in the lowest half of the countries competing in this year’s game, according to the World Cup rankings.

Another Senegalese, Issa Sy, will be in charge of blowing the whistle in the middle of the match, with assistance from El Hadji Samba.

When Bafana Bafana faced Ghana in Cape Coast, Samba was on the line, as was Djibril Camara, who will serve as the Assistant VAR official for tonight’s game at the Stade Omnisport Roumdé Adjia in Garoua.

Maguette is a Senegalese schoolteacher who is being observed at the AFCON in preparation for the World Cup in South Africa.

He officiated in 10 international matches last year and has also refereed in the FIFA Club World Cup and the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, among other competitions.

For the first time, all 52 games in the tournament will be decided by video assistant referees (VAR), after it was only utilized in the quarterfinals of the 2019 edition in Egypt.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed 24 referees to preside at the AFCON finals this year.
