Latest Ghana Education News – Stay away from work, TEWU Declares strike, warns non-teaching staff of GES.
The National Executive Council of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of TUC (Ghana) will embark on a nationwide strike effective Wednesday, 5th January 2022.
According to the press release copied to Ghana Education News, all Non-Teaching Staff of the Ghana Education Service are to stay away from work to back the demands of the union.

TEWU Declares strike: Members who are to adhere to the directive
Staff who are expected to adhere to the TEUW directives includes but not limited to Domestic Bursars, Matrons, Cooks, Pantry Hands, Labourers, Cleaners, Administrators,
Accountants, Librarians, Logistics and Supply Officers, Internal Auditors, etc who are members of TEWU.
The strike action by TEWU aims among other things to get the government to pay members their Continuous Development Allowance. The national leadership of TEWU has called on all members to strictly adhere to the directive.
In a related development, the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of TUC (Ghana) in a news conference indicated there were disturbing issues confronting the education sector which can plunge the academic calendar into serious trouble.
“Government and its agencies to live up to their responsibilities and avoid acts that will disturb the industrial harmony and peace, which workers (our members) have tried to maintain in the face of the meagre increase in salaries coupled with increases in the prices of goods and services in the country”
The union has described a discriminatory government’s approach to paying the continuous professional development allowance.
Since the announcement of the payment of the CPD allowance, efforts by TEWU to be considered have proved unsuccessful. While professionals and unprofessional teachers continue to enjoy GHS1200 and GHS800.00per annum respectively.
The union disclosed that members of TEWU are to receive GHS600.00 but this has not been paid yet the President during his State of the Nation Address indicated the CPA has been paid to all teaching and non-teaching staff.
” To make matters worse, in March last year, the President, in the State of the Nation’s Address (SONA), presented to Parliament, announced that he has paid CPD allowance to both Teaching and Non-Teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service. “
” If payment of this allowance has been made, why is it that non-teaching staff have not received any?” The Union quizzed.
It accused the government of not paying prompt attention to the welfare needs and other concerns of the non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
“At the last National Executive Council meeting held in December 2021, it was resolved among others, that if by the close of the year 2021, the CPD allowance is not been paid to
the non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service, then as schools re-open for the last phase of the second semester of 2020/2021 academic year, our members will withdraw their services to push home our demand for the payment of this CPD allowance”
