COP George Akuffo Dampare has received a lot of praises since he was appointed the acting inspector general of police. He has so far been successful in bringing down armed robbery and other criminal cases in the country recently. For now, the regular stories of ritual murder, armed robbery, murder, and many others have all been reduced.
The community police presence is back and whenever there is an issue they are there to ensure calm tempers and the perpetrators are grabbed immediately. Almost everyone seems to be happy with COP George Akuffo Dampare but a few persons still have problems with him and one of them is Lawyer Maurice Ampaw.
The popular lawyer on his ‘Mra Ne Abrabo Mu Nsem’ program on Wuntumi television was furious at the police administration and indicated that a lot of things are not right in the system. It would be recalled Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah was arrested and detained by the police before being sent to court.
Lawyer Maurice Ampaw who was angry at the conduct of the police on Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah believes that there have been several of such cases in the country where innocent persons have been detained wrongly as it happened to Owusu Bempah.
According to him, most people have complained about how the police demand money at the stations for a suspect to be granted bail, a situation that goes contrary to the laws of the country.
Bail conditions are supposed to be free but there have been several instances where suspects complained that they had to settle money at the stations before they are granted bail. “The police station is not a bank for the police to be demanding monies from suspects”. These were the words of Lawyer Maurice Ampaw on the program.
Now, the ball lies in the court of COP George Akuffo Dampare to ensure that his officers put a stop to the practice as alleged by the popular lawyer.
Maurice Ampaw who is not happy told George Akuffo Dampare straight in the face that he should stop his boys from demanding monies before suspects are provided bail at the police station.
This is a huge debate that the entire country should start contemplating. The issue of police officers demanding monies in line of duties is not new and maybe Mr. Dampare should work to ensure that perception is erased from the command.
