W/R: Akufo-Addo Statue Suffers Structural Damage

The statue of President Nana Akufo-Addo, prominently displayed in front of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi, Western Region, has sustained damage, raising questions about its durability and public perception.

Residents question whether vandalism or rushed construction is to blame for the partial damage to the monument, unveiled to honor key regional projects.

A gaping hole was discovered on the leg of the statue on December 16, 2024. The statue commemorates major projects under Akufo-Addo’s administration in the Western Region.

A surprising hole found in the statue’s leg sparks questions about its durability.

On the morning of Monday, December 16, 2024, a gaping hole was discovered at the back of one of the statue’s legs. The cause of the damage remains unclear—whether it was the result of deliberate vandalism or a structural defect.

This comes after some residents had previously threatened to bring down the statue, although no direct link has been established between those statements and the current state of the monument.

“I am surprised. This was meant to honor the president, but I don’t believe anyone around here has been seen trying to destroy it,” remarked Doris Arhin, a local resident.

Another resident, Esther Anosi, suggested the rushed timeline of its construction could be to blame. “It was supposed to take two months but was completed in just two weeks. That might have caused defects,” she stated.

The statue was unveiled by President Akufo-Addo as part of a tour of the Western Region to commemorate his administration’s flagship projects, including the rehabilitation of Effia-Nkwanta Hospital, the 3-tier Sinohydro interchange, and the Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment.

Despite its symbolic intent, the damage has sparked conversations about its craftsmanship and the public’s mixed reactions to its presence.
