The Atebubu-Amantin Ghana National fire service (GNFS) in collaboration with the Tropenbos-Ghana has launched 2022/2023 anti-bush fire campaign.
The campaign among others is to educate people on effect of bush fires during dry season.
This years launching was under the theme: Prevention of bush fires, fighting global warming and climate change, a collaborative responsibility.
During the launching, two hundred and fifty (250) fire volunteers were also inuagurated to support the campaign against bush fire.
Speaking at the program, Bono East regional fire Service Commander, *ACFO 1 Madam Roberta Aggrey Ghanson* stated that, research conducted has revealed that the area is bushfire prone and that most of fires were caused by hunters and herdsmen. She commended the 250 volunteers who have accepted to play their role to support the fight against bush fire in the region.
She appealed to the residents to respect the fire volunteers as the way they respect fire service workers.
On his side, the Vice President of Bono East regional house of Chiefs/Paramount Chief of Bassa Traditional Area, Nana Owusu Sakyi III, also implored Ghanaians to support the Ghana National Fire Service to protect the vegetation of the country against fire.
Nana Owusu Sakyi noted that human activities namely smoking, cooking, palm- wine tapping were the main causes of bush fire during the dry season.
He cautioned hunters who intentionally set fire on forests and other vegetation to kill bush animals should stop, saying that they must not destroy the ecology in favour of their selfish game.
Meanwhile, Dr. Isaac Nunoo, the Project Manager, Tropenbos-Ghana, said he was an international organisation that supported local and milti – stakeholder’s interventions on sustainable landscape in tropical forests.
He said Tropenbos international operated in three main thematic areas; community rights to forested lands, inclusive finance for sustainable landscape, and sustainable agro commodities towards climate-smart sustainable production models.
Dr.Nunoo entreated the fire volunteers to disseminate the skills and knowledge learnt about roles and responsibility on protecting the transitional landscape, to benefit mankind and animal lives.
