The former Ministry of Zongo and Inner City Development has inaugurated an Astro turf at Tafo in the Old Tafo Municipality of the Ashanti Region as part of government’s efforts to improve sports infrastructure in the country.
The project, which was constructed by Memeleny Construction Enterprise, becomes the newest addition to government’s ‘one constituency one Astro turf’ program.
Municipal Chief Executive of Old Tafo, Hon Dr Fred Obeng Owusu in a welcome address stated that, Youth and sports are something paramount and very dear to the President of the Republic H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo.
He explained that government’s ongoing construction of astroturf projects in which Tafo “sakasaka” park formed part and has received a face-lift, will go a long way to improve sports activities in the Municipality as well as refrain the youth from social vices.
Dr. Fred Obeng Owusu receiving the keys disclosed that the Zongo development funded pitch project was under the auspices of the former Member of Parliament, Hon Dr Anthony Akoto Osei which started with green grass then but later, with effort put in place by the two ensured the advocacy for the astroturf.
Addressing the gathering the National Director of planning in the former Ministry of Inner City and Zongo development, Mohammed Alhassan said the 55 by 95 metre size and several other furnished facilities make up a complete turf could also generate revenue if properly managed.

The Contractor of the Tafo Artificial turf who is also the Chief Executive Officer for Memeleny Enterprise, Mr. Ahmed Meme aka Ninja speaking in an interview with newsmen advised the beneficiaries to cultivate maintenance culture so as to last long for future generation.
The former RTU defender disclosed that a period of 4 four months were used to construct and furnish the pitch.
