Minority Caucus’s Selective Outrage Over Chief Justice’s Suspension

The planned demonstration by the majority opposition parties on May 5 lead by the NPP is a futile endeavor, bereft of logic and reason.

It is nothing short of preposterous to embark on a demonstration concerning a matter that is currently undergoing a legal process. The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) attempt to politicize the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is a blatant ploy to manipulate public opinion and twist the narrative.

Meanwhile, the minority caucus’s call for the President to reinstate the Chief Justice and their appeal to women to protest against her suspension is a glaring display of hypocrisy.

They seem to have conveniently forgotten that the President is acting in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. It is worth noting that during the removal of Charlotte Osei, the NPP remained eerily silent as the same constitutional provision was invoked by former President Akufo-Addo.

Comrades, as the situation currently stands, there are six petitions against the Chief Justice, and it would be prudent for the minority caucus to allow the due process of the law to unfold. President John Mahama, with his vast experience in politics, having traversed the corridors of power from Member of Parliament to Deputy Minister, Minister, Vice President, and finally, President, is well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the Constitution. It is unfathomable to suggest that he would wilfully disregard or compromise the Constitution.

In light of this, it is imperative for all stakeholders to permit the legal process to run its course, rather than resorting to public demonstrations and emotive appeals. The Constitution is sacrosanct, and its provisions must be respected and adhered to, without fear or favor. Undoubtdely, by allowing the process to unfold, we can ensure that justice is served, and the integrity of the Judiciary is upheld.
