Kwabre East: MP joins Committee on Human Rights to visit Nsawam Prisons

On 19th May 2025, Hon Onyina Acheampong Akwasi Gyamfi the member of Parliament for Kwabre East constituency joined the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights as they paid a monitoring visit to the Nsawam Medium Security Prison to appreciate the conditions at the facility.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Ernest Anim, pointed out that the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin was very passionate about human rights which culminated in the creation of the Committee on Human Rights, the first since Ghana’s democratic dispensation.

The Eastern Regional Commander and Officer-in-Charge of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, DDP Patrick Thomas Seidu stated that the facility is overcrowded because the original holding capacity was 717 inmates but currently the number is 3,548.
