Halt the Dismissals, Mr. President ~ MP, Kwadaso

The decision of President Mahama, through his chief of staff—Mr. Julius Debrah, is not only troubling but very unfortunate to say the least. President Mahama, throughout the electioneering campaign promised to create jobs for the citizenry, especially the youth. He did not promise dismissals.

He blamed the former administration for not creating jobs for the youth when evidence showed that the government worked so hard to creatively create jobs for the citizenry.

All the innovative interventions introduced by the Nana Addo-Bawumia administration helped in creating jobs to deal with the unemployment menace that got out of hand between January 2009 and January 2017. Within that period, the government did less to provide jobs for the citizenry, particularly the youth. This led to the formation of unemployed graduates association of Ghana.

From January 2017 to January 2025, the then government, through NABCO, the creation of additional districts, regions, the reintroduction of the Ghana card leading to the establishment of offices in every district, the national ambulance service, the medical drone delivery system, the one district one factory, the planting for food and jobs, and many others contributed in providing jobs for the people.

Although, more work has to be done to ensure that more jobs are created to cater for those who are still without jobs, it becomes unconscionable for the Mahama administration to dismiss persons who have legitimately been employed by a government whose duty is to seek their welfare and wellbeing.

Why should a government elected by the people to seek their welfare turn round to dismiss them? What is the motivation behind this needless and not-well-thought-out action unless it is being deliberately done on the back of political machinations.

Mr. President, this is not how to reset a country and economy. This is not what you promised the country. You campaigned on the back of job creation and not job cutting. You promised to reset the country and not to reverse its gains.

Mr. President, your action is backward, retrogressive and undermines the constitution. Article 36(1) of the 1992 constitution betrays your judgement and action. It states, “The State shall take all necessary action to ensure that the national economy is managed in such a manner as to maximize the rate of economic development and to secure the maximum Welfare, freedom and happiness of every person in Ghana and to provide adequate means of livelihood and suitable employment and public assistance to the needy.”

Mr. President, what you have done is a direct opposite to what the above constitutional provision purports. Your action affronts the constitution. You are creating the impression that those affected citizens are second-rated citizens. Or are you sacking them in order to bring in members of your political party or sympathizers of your party who are seeking jobs? If this is your intention then Mr. President, you are failing the country and your action is completely unfair and in sharp contrast to your position of safeguarding jobs and creating more.

Mr. President, if you cannot create jobs for the people. If your promised 24-hour economy cannot help to create jobs, then you have no business to lead.

I will conclude by suggesting to you to rescind your decision, halt the wrongful and illegal dismissals and allow your own people who voted you into power to go back to work.

Ghana deserves better.

God bless Ghana!!!
