BECE, KWABRE East: Headteacher allegedly detains, prevents 2 female candidates from writing Mathematics Paper for owing school fees, MP calls for arrest of the Suspect

The Headteacher of the Big Six Educational Complex a private school located at meduma “80s” in the Kwabre East municipality, Mr Bathew has allegely locked in his 2 female BECE candidates in a room on Monday, June 16, 2025, and prevented them from writing their first paper, Mathematics, at Simms High School, the designated exam centre in Fawoade in the same municipality due to unpaid school fees, despite the fact that they have paid the examination fees.

According to reports, Mr Bathew, the headteacher dragged the girls from the exams hall some minutes before the start, locked and detained them in a nearby storey building until the end of the mathematics paper, confined one candidate over unpaid ghc 700 school fees and another candidate’s refusal to sleep a school-organised camping session.

The incident happened in the presence of the Member of Parliament for Kwabre East Constituency, when Hon. Onyina Acheampong Akwasi Gyamfi’s visit to the examination centres to give moral support to the candidates, and also advised them to stay calm for their life after examination reached him at SIMMs SHS.

Although the Member of Parliament was making necessary interventions with the examination officers to enable the affected candidates to write the exams, He condemned the reported detention of two candidates by their headmaster, describing the act as “absurd” and amounting to kidnapping.

“It is absurd because this is their future. You cannot deny them the right to write exams for any reason,” the MP fumed.

The Kwabre East Legislator has also made official complaint to the Crime Office of the Ghana Police Service in Kwabre East for the immediate arrest of the headteacher for questioning. He spoke to Peace/Hello Fm news reporter, Rexkin Ohene Boateng.

“I have sent a report to the crime officer. I want the person involved to be held accountable for this action,” he stated.

Hon. Onyina Gyamfi also disclosed that a similar incident reportedly occurred at the same school last year. This time, however, he has taken a personal interest in ensuring accountability.

The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, with calls for swift sanctions and better protection for students’ rights.

Meanwhile, the West Africa Examinations Council WAEC, has advised against such actions, stating that once candidates have paid their exam fees, they should be allowed to sit for the exams, and schools should pursue the outstanding fees separately.

The Ghana Education Service has also issued warnings against schools charging unauthorized BECE registration fees and has instructed schools to refund such fees and sanctioned any school head found to have collected them.
