Battle against illicit mining: Lands Minister Launches National Secretariat to Combat Galamsey Menace

In a resolute effort to intensify the battle against illicit mining, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has formally inaugurated the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).

This intelligence-driven secretariat has been vested with the central authority to initiate, coordinate, and supervise all mining raids and swoops nationwide.

At the launch ceremony held on Thursday, June 26, Hon. Buah underscored the imperative of a centralized unit to harmonize anti-galamsey endeavors, stressing that NAIMOS is the sole entity mandated to oversee all anti-illegal mining operations across the 16 regions.

He reaffirmed the government’s unrelenting commitment to tackling the galamsey scourge, adding that he is unflinching in his determination to combat illicit mining with unyielding resolve.

“Approximately 16% of our land reserves have been severely degraded, necessitating urgent measures to restore our vegetative cover,” Buah declared.

“I hereby pledge my unreserved commitment to supporting NAIMOS’s activities and operations, aligning with the Ghanaian people’s aspirations to eradicate galamsey.”

Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, who graced the occasion, also avowed his support for the secretariat, assuring that his ministry would provide indispensable backing to ensure NAIMOS’s success.

Deputy Defence Minister, Brogya Genfi, assured that the military would remain an integral partner in the secretariat’s endeavors to rejuvenate the nation’s depleted forests and polluted water bodies.

NAIMOS has already achieved notable successes, conducting raids in several regions, confiscating excavators, apprehending illicit miners, including Chinese nationals, and seizing unapproved mining equipment and

Undoubtedly, with the support of the military, National Security, and other allied partners, the secretariat is positioned to intensify its efforts to dismantle unapproved mining operations and sanitize the environment.

The launch ceremony was attended by heads and representatives of agencies under the ministry, who collectively pledged their support and commitment to tackling the galamsey menace, a pernicious threat to the environment.
